U.S. Post Office
1101 Davis Street
Evanston, Illinois

In 1938, a competition was held among artists by the Treasury Department’s Section program for the contract to produce artwork to decorate the new post office being built on Davis Street. The winners were both from the state of New York. Robert I. Russin of New York City created the two cast aluminum sculptures for the interior lobby. These sculptures, “Throwing the Mail” and “Mail Handler”, are each 7′ tall and are covered with 23 carat gold foil. The two exterior entrance doors are each topped with carved limestone reliefs done by Armin a. Scheler of New Rochelle, New York entitled “The Message” and “The Answer”.
